Empowering and Protecting Consumers: UK Government consultation on the future of the consumer landscape – Wales Briefing

We have published a briefing on the UK Government’s consultation, Empowering and Protecting Consumers. That consultation proposes to abolish Consumer Focus Wales and transfer its functions to other bodies, primarily the Citizens Advice service.

Royal Mail failed to hit its first class stamped and metered delivery targets in half of postcodes in Wales during the first quarter of the year. Overall, Wales narrowly missed its target, reaching 91.3%, but has now failed for the last three consecutive quarters.

Royal Mail cited severe winter weather and hefty backlogs for missing more than half of its first class delivery targets in Wales during the fourth quarter of the year. Here in Wales, good progress has been made in
getting the right partners involved in mitigating the
impacts of fuel poverty. However despite these
efforts more households have been falling into
fuel poverty and sadly as predicted the Welsh
Government’s frst fuel poverty target, to eliminate
fuel poverty amongst vulnerable groups by 2010,
was missed, largely as a result of increasing
energy prices.

The ability to maintain a warm home is a fundamental issue for consumers. The rising cost of energy is making this a greater challenge for an increasing number of consumers in Wales, particularly the most vulnerable. For those living off the mains gas network the challenges are often even greater.
