Response to Consultation Paper on Death Certification, Burial and Cremation

Published: 29 April 2010

Consumer Focus Scotland welcomes the invitation to respond to the above consultation.  Our former Director, Martyn Evans, was a member of the Burial and Cremation Review Group and we are pleased that the Scottish Government is
consulting on their recommendations.  We agree with the broad principles of changing the legislation in order to meet the needs of the people of Scotland in the 21st century, removing some of the burden of costs that are currently incurred, and facilitating the availability of affordable local burial or cremation.  Any new Scottish legislation should align with policies in the rest of the UK so that no cross border difficulties are created.  Many people who are buried or cremated in Scotland will have died in other parts of the UK and vice versa.
