Consumer Focus Scotland response to Scotland’s Independent Budget Review Panel report

Responding to the final report of Scotland’s Independent Budget Review Panel, Marieke Dwarshuis, Director, Consumer Focus Scotland, said:

“The options outlined in the budget review panel’s report have far reaching implications for users of public services in Scotland. At the same time as budgets tighten and services are reduced, consumer demand and need for public services is likely to increase. Given the scale of the changes proposed we are disappointed that the report does not refer to the need for engagement with service users.

“We believe that fully involving users of public services in decisions about the kind of services they need and want to use, and how these can best be delivered, should be an integral part of designing and implementing service change. Turning service users into active partners rather than passive recipients is one of the most effective ways of ensuring services more closely meet people’s needs and are delivered effectively.

“We are pleased that the report reflects the importance of protecting and supporting the most vulnerable in society. Service providers must seek, and act on, the views of those who rely most on their services as decisions on future provision are made.”
