Other search engines should follow Microsoft’s lead

Published: 19 January 2010

Commenting on Microsoft reducing the data retention time of its search engine Bing from 18 months to 6 months, Clemence Marcelis, Consumer Focus, said:

“We are happy to see Microsoft following the European Commission’s recommendation.

“This is a step in the right direction as consumers need to know that their personal data is not being stored for an excessive length of time.  The fact that Microsoft can reduce their retention period indicates that the previous terms were longer than necessary.

“We are calling for high industry standards to protect consumers’ privacy.  Other search engine providers such as Google should follow Microsoft’s lead.”
