On welcoming Ofgem’s investigation results on direct debits, Audrey Gallacher, Consumer Focus energy expert, said:
“It will be reassuring to customers that there’s no evidence of energy companies systematically over collecting direct debit payments. It’s still the cheapest way to pay for energy and spreading the cost over a year can be a convenient way to cope with large bills.
“Sadly, what the report does show is the complete disregard energy companies can have for their customers. Its time they stopped treating people as account numbers and adopt Ofgem’s proposed improvements without delay.”
