Consumer Focus response to the E.ON gas price cut announced today

Published: 8 March 2010

Robert Hammond, energy expert at Consumer Focus said:

‘E.ON customers will see this as a piece of welcome news.  Any price cut is better than no price cut at all,  but a pattern is emerging and yet again our energy companies are operating with a pack mentality.

It speaks volumes that this announcement is remarkably similar to ones made recently by E.ON’s competitors.  It is crystal clear that suppliers are operating in a low-risk market where there is insufficient competition to drive down prices.

‘Wholesale energy prices have been falling since 2008, yet our suppliers wait until the spring, when we obviously use our heating less, to pass on meagre price cuts – it is a model of how a competitive market shouldn’t work.’
