Consumer Focus’ response to the consultation on role of Consumer Advocate

Published: 2 December 2009

Responding to the government consultation on the powers and responsibilities of the Consumer Advocate, Larry Whitty, Chair of Consumer Focus said:

‘We must achieve a better balance of power between consumers and those who provide them with goods and services.

‘Active consumers can condition market behaviour only if they have the information and power to act. The focus of this consultation on practical measures such as collective redress, compensation and consumer education should help consumers to be better informed and better able to take action against companies who fail them.

‘Consumer Focus is in its second full year of operation. In that time we have completed a successful merger to create the organisation and have delivered a focused and successful programme of work.

‘The creation of a Consumer Advocate will add to our existing armoury and enhance our ability to champion consumer interests.

‘The Consumer Advocate will be in a position to achieve real and measurable benefits for consumers. We welcome the consultation on the legislation to establish the best ways in which to empower consumers.’

We are the voice of the consumer, and work to secure a fair deal on their behalf
  • The role of Consumer Advocate was first outlined in the Consumer White Paper, A better deal for consumers,  July 2009
