On 9th February 2010 the Green Energy Supply Certification Scheme was launched. This is an independent scheme that verifies the claims made by energy suppliers against their green energy tariffs. Similar to a kite mark, the scheme awards a ‘Green label’ to renewable energy products that will deliver a real, measurable environmental difference.
The aim of the scheme is to give consumers confidence in the quality of their green tariff and provide potential purchasers with information to make an informed choice about green tariffs.
By purchasing a green energy tariff that has been awarded the label, consumers can be confident they are buying electricity that comes from a renewable source and that the energy supplier is delivering additional environmental benefits over and above their existing regulatory obligations. The additional benefits can include small-scale renewable energy generation (so-called “green schemes”), energy efficiency or investment in high quality carbon offsets.
The scheme is controlled by a panel of experts who are qualified to assess the range of green energy energy products in the market, applying a set of guidelines for green tariffs drawn up by Ofgem, the government regulator of gas and electricity markets in the UK.
As well as the certified products, there are other green products available in the market. Click on each supplier’s name to find out more information about their green offerings. We do our best to make sure our information is as up to date as possible but strongly recommend that if you are thinking about changing your company, you first contact them to check the offer is still available.
